As the toy of the group, detail and accuracy take a back seat to playability, even so, the accuracy of this Tumbler is good. Initial impressions are that the shape and form is accurate, but a closer look shows that is doesn't accurately represent the multilayered nature of the Tumbler, a lot of it is cast from one piece of plastic.
The front wheels are reverse axle (just like in the movie) but the struts that support the wheels are thinner than you would expect, as a result the front section sags slightly. Only some slight pressure will cause the whole assembly to flex and the wheels to rub against the body of the car. These front wheels are also quite rounded, not flat, I think they were designed that way so the sagging wheels aren't as noticeable.
Two versions of this toy were released, a common version and a chase repaint. The mass production paint job is very dark purple, with silver detailing and scuff marks, to denote battle damage. The chase version is a much more movie accurate paint job, fully black with gold highlights, and no battle damage. This paint job is much much harder to find, but not impossible.
Features for this tumbler are free rolling wheels, opening cockpit, electronic lights and sounds, and pop out missile launchers. The opening cockpit simply swings open from a hinge at the back of the door, no attempt has been made to make the door open like in the movie, which is a shame. The cockpit area fits one standard Batman begins figure from the movie line, but I find that the Japanese Batman Microman figures by Takara work a lot better, see fig 4.
Three red buttons work the lights, sounds and missile features. One side button triggers flashing laser lights and sounds. The Lasers are two red lights, located where the machine guns were in the movie. The other side button activates the engine light and engine roaring sound. Keep this button pressed and the engine light contines to flash and the roaring sound changes to a cruising sound, a nice touch!
The middle button triggers a feature that the movie tumbler didn't have, the sides of the Tumbler to spring open revealing two working missile launchers. Each launcher has a button on top so it can fire a missile.
Mattel own the Hot Wheels line and in my first review I showcased the Transmorph ATV. If the transform mechanism was adapted to the Tumbler, it would have been awesome. As it is the pop open launchers spring open too violently for my liking. This Tumbler makes a good toy, making a great accessory to any Batman action figures you may have. If you're looking for a more accurate representation of the Tumbler I recommend looking at the next review!
